I ‘see’ paintings wherever I am. Expressing the feelings and memories of places is my intension. The visual appearance of a landscape is secondary. Figures, and more often swimmers, appear to enhance a memory of place and time. Through drawings and photos made on site the physicality of the paint itself then determines the outcome creating a certain ambiguity, for the viewer to interpret. Sometimes a painting takes endless reworking, or the time to stop can come quite quickly. Recognising the moment is when the magic occurs. Instagram. valbrightjonesart
Biography
After a career of secondary school art teaching, Val Bright-Jones relished the opportunity to return to education completing an MA in Fine Art in 2015 and now devotes her time solely to her own practice. The Suffolk countryside, close to the River Stour and ancient Water Meadows of Sudbury are a constant inspiration, plus a love of wild swimming. Val lived in Devon for two years where a love of seascapes developed further. Travels to find contrasting land and seascapes, especially Cornwall, Northumberland and Scotland, and visits to France and Australia add to the variety of her work. Joan Eardley, Van Gogh, Turner, Hockney and Matisse are strong influences as Val restlessly pushes her work forward in an endless search. She exhibits regularly at Art Fair East, Norwich and several galleries in Suffolk. Work was shortlisted for the RA Summer Show in 2018 and is in collections in the UK, Australia, and Canada. Her collections can be viewed in a private garden studio where visitors are welcome.
